Everyone wants to be successful when thinking about working at home. Most people start off on the right foot, however with time things can go left for one reason or another. We have put together some TIPS that will help you to be successful in working at home and managing your time with your family as well.
· You will want to designate a place to work like an office or spare room.
· Keep your work area organized and neat.
· Make sure you know where things are when you need them so you are not wasting time searching for things in your work area.
· Stay motivated and self disciplined when it comes to getting your work done, don't let yourself get distracted by T. V., Phone, etc.
· You will want to work in a quiet environment without a lot of noise in or around the room.
· Let family and friends know what hours you will be working so you will not be interrupted during your work time.
· Make sure you meet all deadlines, do not be late on turning your work, projects, etc. into your boss or client.
· Talk with your family and friends about how important your work is and that your work is no different than theirs is just because you work at home. Some people will want you to be available for everything because you work from home, you have to learn to set limits or you will never get anything done.
· Back up your files often! You never know when a computer can crash and you could loose all your files. Nothing is worse then having to re-do hours and hours of work. Anything can cause a PC Crash, electric surges, viruses, improper shut-down, etc. We recommend backing up at least 2 to 3 times a week at a minimum.
· Use a virus protection and make sure it checks for automatic updates on the Internet daily. Check all file attachments before opening them.
· Keep all receipts! You will be surprised at what you can deduct at the end of the year from your taxes when you work from your home office. Anywhere from pencils, paperclips to software and printers. You can even take off part of your utilities, rent / mortgage payment, etc. For example if you use 1 room for your home office and you have a 4 room house then you can possibly take off 1/4 of your rent /mortgage, utilities, phone bill (business calls), etc. from your taxes.
· Figure in all your savings into your monthly pay! If you are saving on Day care, Office Clothes, Eating out for lunch, Gas and wear and tear on your car. All of these things can be added into your budget every month and to your pay that you are making at home. Another words, if you are making $9.00 an hour at home, then in reality you probably are making around $11+ an hour with all the money you are saving from expenses you are not paying out when you were working in an office.
· If you are not having taxes taken out of your check when working at home then be sure to put at least 15 to 20% aside in a savings account or separate checking account to go towards your taxes that would normally be taken out of your check at an office job. |
