We encourage you to
read as much of our web page as possible to learn about medical transcription as a
career.
Below is information
on the "facts" about getting hired as a new medical transcriptionist after proper
training!
We will not mislead
you in any way and will tell you both the pros and cons of finding work as a new MT! There
are plenty of jobs for MTs just starting out in the career.
Once you have
completed the medical transcription course you will be presented with a certificate of
completion. You will also receive job and resume assistance for up to two years. Should you
decide to change the physician you work for, or if you want to work for several physicians,
you can notify us and your resume will be re-posted to our system and referred out to open
positions. We encourage you to submit your own resume as well.
The MTatHome Medical
Transcription Course takes an average of six months to complete for most people. However;
there are some students who may need to take six months to one year. This will just depend
on if you are going to study full-time or part time. If you need to take longer this is
okay.
Some students may work
a full-time job while taking the course and may not have a lot of time each day to study.
There is not a time limit on the completion of our course at this time. However, if you do
take longer than two years for any reason; you might be required to purchase updated
material if the books you have are no longer being used. We update our books as new
editions are released. These are usually every few years.
Please do not let
anyone tell you that you can learn medical transcription in a few months. There is too much
to learn, and you want to make sure you get the best training that you can. The students
who do finish their MT course in under six months are usual those with a medical background
such as nursing or medical assistants.
Job Assistance
It can take an average
of one to three months after receiving the certificate to start working as an MT. This is
just an average. We have many students who have gotten into positions much sooner, and
others that it might take longer.
We receive many
referrals from people that have taken our course in medical transcription and were happy
with their training. We have seen family members enroll within several months of each other
because of how pleased they were. Physicians and universities have also referred others to
MTatHome. We are very well known.
Medical Transcription Jobs at
Home
MTatHome.com works
with both medical transcriptionist and companies to bring them
together.
It is important to know that any reputable training company should tell you that they
cannot guarantee anyone a job after training. As we mentioned above, there are too many
variables.
Upon completion of the
medical transcription course, we promote our students’ resumes to companies, doctors and
hospitals. Our medical transcriptionist are trained properly so that they can transcribe
the dictations in a timely manner with high accuracy. Please read below to see how we
assist both the new MTs that have successfully completed our course with high-accuracy
levels & doctors and hospitals that are looking for MTs to fill their job openings from
home.
We teach our MTs how to use well known tools to become a more productive MT. The more lines
per hour you can produce the more pay you will make! Using software such as text expanders
can increase your lines per hour tremendously. We show our students how to create their own
text expander with MS Word.
When you present yourself for a Medical Transcription job opening, it is important that you
uphold professionalism. Even if you are a thousand miles away from the potential employer
you must make sure that you have a quiet place to work, answer phones, etc.
Some companies do have
times when they have staff meetings through the use of a web camera. If you are ever in
this position, please make sure you are dressed professional. Always answer your phone in a
professional way, even if it is simply saying, “Good morning, this is
____________.”
Make sure you have a
professional resume. If you are looking for work as an Independent Contractor, then make
sure you have a cover letter, brochure and business cards that you can give to doctors’
offices for consideration as potential clients. Many MTs have branched out and started
their own medical transcription business instead of just working for one doctor. This is a
decision you would have to make as to which direction you would want to go with your
career.
As we mentioned earlier; upon completion
of the course, we will assist you with the touch ups to your resume at which point your
resume is posted and sent out to open positions for new MTs. The types of places we will
refer the resume, is to doctors, hospitals, and MT contract companies that hire MTs to
"work from home" for their company.
These are job openings for new MTs that have
had medical transcription training, with a certificate of completion, and a
high-accuracy level. These job openings allow the new MTs to get their foot in the
door of building experience. After working for at least one year then you can start
applying for most all the online job postings for MTs asking for prior work
experience.
Keep in mind that all
the MTs that have 1, 2 and 3+ years of experience started as a “new MT” and got their work
experience from starting out after their training, just like you!
Therefore, when people
try to tell you that there are not positions for new MTs right out of training, then ask
them where the experienced MTs got their experience from in the first place! However; with
that said, please be aware that the doctors, hospitals, and MT contract companies that will
generously give new MTs a chance to get their career started will have some
expectations.
They do normally
expect for the MT to have a high-accuracy level and to carry professionalism in the work
they do for the patient records that are transcribed. While you do have the freedom of
being able to work at home for one or more doctors who may be located hundreds of miles
away, you do need to treat the job you have out of your home with just as much
professionalism, if not more, and then you would if you were at an office
job!
Average time to get
your first medical transcription job position:
Questions have been
asked about the difficulty of finding work as a new medical transcriptionist.
There are jobs all
over the USA, for both the new and experienced medical transcriptionist (MTs). Physicians,
hospitals and offices are no longer posting job openings for new medical transcriptionist
in newspapers or on the Internet.
They use to post job ads that said, "no experience necessary" for MTs; however, the problem
is that employers would receive resumes from both qualified MTs and a flood of resumes from
those who had never taken a medical transcription course. They even received some from
people who did not know what medical transcription was!
This is why most
physicians, hospitals, and medical transcription services are posting their openings for
new MTs with medical transcription training schools / programs. If you do not see
classified listings for new MTs this does not
indicate jobs are not available, they
are!
The work-at-home
medical transcriptionist has the added advantage of not having to be physically near the
physician, hospital or office they are “working” for. In short, there are a lot of
good-paying jobs out there! It just takes a little time to get your foot in the
door.
However, this is true
no matter what career field you train for. There are people that go to college for four
years, graduate and then find it may take several months to get that first job! This is
where we will come in at as well; we will give you job assistance with your medical
transcription training.
Digital medical
transcription has opened up many new medical transcription jobs across the USA. With the
ease of downloading the dictated medical reports and uploading the transcribed documents
through a secure connection when completed; working from home is easier today than ever
before.
The possibility of
making a good income in medical transcription working out of your home no matter what state
you live in is excellent!

We can tell you that
all of our students get adequate training in digital transcription, terminology, style
& format standards according to the AHDI Book of Style, and a variety of different
medical field reports on how the completed transcribed report should look, and much more.
They are also trained on the HIPAA privacy laws and how to upload files through FTP in a
secure method. They are familiar with using software such as Express Scribe for use with
