Syllabus for our Medical Transcription Training Course


Requirements for the MTatHome Medical Transcription Course:
 

* Many of these items are already included in our
medical transcription course.
 

  • AHDI Book of Style 3 rd edition    
  • AHDI Book of Style Student Workbook Style 3 rd edition   
  • Medical Dictionary (Stedman’s or Dorland's) is preferred.          
  • Digital USB Foot Pedal          
  • You will need to have MS Word installed on your computer, 2007 or 2010 Version.        
  • You will need to have a Windows based computer. XP, Vista or Windows 7.      
  • You must speak English to take our course. Our course is in the English language only at this time.         
  • You do NOT have to live in the USA to take our medical transcription course.       
  • You will need to purchase computer headphones.        

MT Class Length:    

Our Medical Transcription Class is self-paced.  The average length of time to complete the course is six to nine months if studying at least three to four hours a day, 4 days a week.

This is just an average time frame, students who have worked in the healthcare field or have had medical training such as nurses might be able to finish the course a little sooner.  If you work a full-time job while taking the course, it might take you longer to finish depending on how much time you can devote each day. 

Recommended study time is three to four hours a day.  However, we do realize that not everyone can put in this much time each day.  The course is self-paced.


Syllabus of the MTatHome Medical Transcription Training Course:    

I.                            Module One 

The first part of the course will be your Medical terminology Pharmacology, and Anatomy training, which will cover many aspects of the Human Anatomy, including detailed pictures and diagrams. 

 You are not expected to memorize every single medical term!  We will teach you how to break down the medical terms such as learn the different word structures.

Learning medical terminology will include learning and understanding the suffixes prefixes, word roots and combining forms.


Your training will cover over 15 different medical fields including:
   

·          Digestive System   

·          Urinary System   

·          Female Reproductive System

·          Cardiovascular System   

·          Respiratory System

·          Lymphatic and Immune Systems

*After each chapter, you will have exercises within the textbook and chapter quizzes on the Test CD.  These results will be sent into MTatHome. 

II.                           Module Two


In the next part of your course, you will learn grammar and punctuation for MTs, style & format, abbreviations, qualifiers and other important standards for medical transcription, which include:

·   You will learn how important it is to follow the rules of patient privacy and what to do in certain circumstances.    

 

 

   

III.                           Module Three

This module was published in March 2011 and was added to our course curriculum on March 28, 2011. All new course enrollments after the date of 03/28/11 will receive this module.     

This module will cover medical transcription editing, which includes proofreading and editing of voice recognition created reports.  You will also learn the technology that is essential for this career.

You will complete lessons in the textbook along with transcribing over 160+  dictations that you will practice online with immediate feedback.

IV.                            Module Four

  • You will learn to use a digital foot pedal along with the software that will play these files for you. 
  • You will learn to load your dictations into the dictation player software.  
  • We will cover the study of medical reports in the many different medical fields in your course training.  You will learn how the reports should be formatted.     


Practice Dictation:
     

Practice Dictations - Many Hours of Authentic Doctor Dictations in the many different types of medical fields with keys so you can see how well you are learning.

You will have assessments and tests with Authentic Doctor dictations in the different medical fields.
    

When completing our third part of the course you will get additional experience with real doctor dictations of many different medical fields. You would deal with situations such as doctors who may be hard to understand, doctors who may talk fast or mumble and many other scenarios that you can run into when working as a medical transcriptionist.  

You will learn the report formats in multiple medical specialties that are used by the medical transcriptionist when transcribing for different types of doctors.  This will also include chart notes; History; Radiology and Operative reports in addition to many others.

Over 2400 minutes of authentic doctor dictation is included with your course.    

These dictations are digital and done by REAL physicians.    

 

 

V.                            Module Five

Final Part of the Course:      

Once you have completed all the other parts of our medical transcription course, and you have done each of the practice dictations you will then move on to the assessments and finals of the course.  

All of your transcription work and the grade report logs must be turned in MTatHome.

We do allow you to retake tests if you need to at no additional fee.    

Once you have turned everything in you will start preparing your resume and send it to us through an e-mail for our staff to review and edit if it needs to be.  After your resume is complete we would start the Job Assistance process.
