How Health Care Reform can help MTs get more jobs. Continued...

Over the next several years more people will have to get medical insurance and those with prior medical conditions will be able to get the care they desperately need.

This will result in more patient files and more medical reports that will be dictated and need to be either transcribed or edited.  A lot of physicians will continue to use the method of dictating and then having a qualified medical transcriptionist transcribe the reports.  Others that may use speech recognition will have MTs listen to the dictations and then review and edit any errors that the SRT has created.  As we all know SRTs are not error proof.  They do not always know the difference between terms that sound-a-like.

It is even more important than ever to get the proper training and to get your credentials.  If you have already taken a medical transcription course then you might want to consider taking the RMT exam through AHDI.  Once you have worked as an MT or RMT for 2 years you can take the CMT (Certified Medical Transcription) exam through AHDI.

Doctors are going to want to know that the MT they hire is serious about their career.  They want to know that you will keep up with any changes that might happen in the career field, privacy laws (HIPAA), etc.  This is very important to doctors because you are transcribing reports that go into their patients files and become a permanent part of their health record.  Inaccurate reports can lead to a lot of problems for both the patient and the doctor.

Start preparing yourself now for the upcoming changes in the health care industry so that when more people start seeing doctors that could not in the past you will have all the training and information  you will need to be the best medical transcriptionist possible for the doctor you work for.
