EMR Systems and Medical Transcription Cont.

Please do not misunderstand what we are saying.  The EMR system will hopefully help reduce medical errors that have cost many patient’s their lives.  When the EMR is fully in place; most patient’s records will be accessible by the different doctors.

Many physicians are not aware of all the medications or previous medical history of their current patients, especially if they see several doctors for different type medical issues.

It is important that the doctor know everything about the medication their patient is taking and any past and present medical problems.

This is also why it is important for doctors to have the Medical Transcriptionist transcribe the reports and then transfer the file back to the doctor.  Medical Transcription that is done by qualified MTs are very accurate.  The Medical Transcriptionist is the extra set of eyes that the doctor needs to ensure that the diagnosis and medical report of each patient is accurate.

People have busy schedules and when they set a doctors appointment they usually do not have a lot of extra time to waste.  After sitting in the waiting room for 20 minutes to an hour to be seen, they then wait more time in the room for the doctor to see them.  The last thing patient wants is to waste an additional 10 to 15 minutes after the visit is done waiting on the doctor to dictate the visit and check for accuracy.

Physicians' are hearing these complaints more and more.  They are realizing that the patient’s need is very important and this includes how long the visit takes, the accuracy of the patient’s report and not making all of their patient’s frustrated over it all.

For this reason and many others; more doctors are electing to have the Medical Transcriptionist do the medical transcribing of their medical reports instead of a computer.

For those that are doing the dictation themselves, they are having MTs listen to the dictation and review the report that the computer created.

Technology is excelling each year!  About the time you buy a computer and use it for a year it becomes obsolete because a newer version with more technical features comes out.  You then have to learn how to use those programs to keep up to date with the “computer technology”.

Medical Transcription is much of the same!  Over the years you have seen it go from Standard Tapes to  Micro Tapes and now to Digital Format.  It is important to keep up with the changes!  Keep your Medical Transcription knowledge up to date with the times we are living in.  This is very important.

We encourage all MTs to take the RMT exam when they finish their Medical Transcription Course.  No matter what school you go through you should get credentialed after the completion of your course.  You could work for a few months and then take the RMT exam if you choose, however just keep it on a high priority.

As you know, to become a CMT you will need to have taken a Medical Transcription Course and have worked for at least 2 years before taking the exam.  However, having that RMT after your name will show doctors that you are very serious about your career and are willing to learn everything that needs to be learned to produce accurate medical reports for their patient’s files.

You can find testing facilities by contacting AHDI.  There is also book out to help you prepare for the RMT or CMT exams.  These can be found on Amazon.  Just search for the RMT review guide.

We also encourage all students to become a “student member” of AHDI.  They will help you keep up to date on any important changes in the Medical Transcription Career such as new style and formats, guidelines, etc.
