much you average an hour.  However, your accuracy can be a major factor of if you get a job position or not.  You can always improve your typing speed with more practice, the use of macros or text expanders.

A lot of people want to rush through their training so they can get to work quicker.  However, you really should take your time.  It is important to learn as much about Medical Transcription, Style & Format, Grammar, Anatomy, Transcribing dictations and much more before trying to work as an MT.

You do not want to fail a job test because of little knowledge!

 

Medical Transcription is a very rewarding career.  If you are looking at becoming a Medical Transcriptionist, it is important to get the proper training.  You will want to spend 600 or more hours in Medical Transcription training.  This can be done part time or full time. For part time the average is around 6 months. Some will complete the course sooner than others.  It will depend on how much time you have to study and if you have any prior medical knowledge.

Medical Transcription career training is very important.  MTs work in the background of all the other medical professionals.  They

depend on the MTs to catch any errors on the report or mistakes on the physician’s dictation.  You will need to know what should be bold or what the proper abbreviation is for certain medical terms.  All of this is very important to learn throughout your training.  You also will  need to train with authentic physician dictations.  This is very important because you want to be prepared for when you are working as an MT. 

Another important aspect of training for Medical Transcription is that you concentrate more on your accuracy rather than your typing speed.  Yes, your typing speed will be an important part of how

How to make extra money as an MT

Summer can be a little slow for MTs.  More people are on vacation and for some reason, less people see their doctor.

If you find yourself having less to do this summer, here is an idea of how to drum up some work during the slow period.

A lot of Doctors are switching from paper charts to computer charts.  They amount of time that this takes to enter in all of the patient information is enormous.  Offer your services to your local physician to enter in these paper records into their new systems.  With your

medical knowledge and if you can type accurate and at a pretty good wpm, you could get you several of these jobs to keep you busy.  Some may require you going into their office to do the work, however think of the contacts you could get.  Not only would you be finding a way to make some extra money; you also would be introducing your skills in the medical records department.  If they should ever be in need of a Medical Transcriptionist you might just be the first one they call on.

This is the perfect time to get your foot in the door.  Several MTs have done this and now have so

much work they have had to turn away new doctors.

Create your resume, and possibly even a professional looking brochure and business card.  Drop them off at your local doctors offices.  List on there “Conversion of Paper to Electronic Records” as one of your services that you offer along with Medical Transcription. 

Of course an MT has more flexible choices of the location of the doctor because they can be in a different state.  However, entering records is usually done locally.
