Medical Transcription has been around for years. Before Digital Transcription, there were micro-cassettes and hand written reports that MTs had to transcribe from. The newer technology has allowed MTs all over the country to work from their homes. Even though Medical Transcription is a wonderful career to be in, it does take a certain type of person to be successful. A lot of people want to work at home to be with their kids, if this is the only reason then you might want to re-think it. The reason I say this is because working as an MT does take devotion to your job. Of course there are |
people that do work from home with their kids, however each situation is different. Someone with older children might be able to get work done while those with smaller ones might need to ask for outside help with the children while the transcription work is being done. You do have more freedom with your schedule as an MT that works at home, however all dead-lines must be meet on time. As a Medical Transcriptionist you will need to have knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, proper grammar, correct styles and format, as well as good research skills. There may be a time |

What every MT should have on their desk! |

Working as an MT can be a wonderful career. However, there are times that every MT needs a little help. It is so important to transcribe the report correctly. You might ask yourself if all headings should be in bold or where does the comma belong in a certain sentence. Another big question is when to abbreviate a term or write the complete term out. This is where the following |
reference books will come in real handy. Every MT should have the following reference books on hand: AAMT Book of Style (Now AHDI) Electronic Medical Dictionary – (Stedmans or Dorlands) Prescription Drug Reference Book. If you are a student training for Medical Transcription |
then we highly recommend getting the AAMT Student workbook to go along with the AAMT Book of style. Another great reference book that we have found is—Medical Transcriptionist’s Desk Reference by: Carolyn Collins Gates. Of course there are many other reference materials that you can get, those are just the ones that we feel are most important for every MT to have. You can find all these items at: www.amazon.com |
